WC assignment #4
Cisneros Yesica-Godoy Py Rosario
Choose a quote from The Diary of Anne Frank which reflects Anne´s Main values in life. Explain that quote in the light of her book.
In our opinion the quote from the book “Anne Frank: The Diary Of A Young Girl”: “Beauty remains even i n misfortune. If you choose look for it, you discover more and more happiness and regain your balance. A person who is happy, a person who has courage and faith will never die in misery…” (Frank Anne; 1991),reflects Anne´s main values in life. This quote in particular depicts her optimism through the terrible situation Jews had to face during German occupation in The Second World War. Among these values we can mention: her love for life; nature;her appreciation for the goodness in people and their good intentions.
Due to the war and the persecution of Jews, Anne and her family went into hiding in a Secret Annexe. This life in captivity brought a number of difficulties. One of those difficulties was the stress confinement caused in relationships. The lack of privacy and not being able to go out led to tension among the members of the Annexe. Another difficulty was the lack of food. The shortage of basic elements such as oil, butter and vegetables made difficult to mantain a balanced diet. Food became precious and very valuable as birthday´s gifts. Moreover, they had to face thefear of being caught on a daily basis.
Despite of all these difficulties Anne had to live, she found in herself the strenght to see the good in everything. The quote really shows this because Anne believed in extracting the beauty out of the smallest details. She always kept perspective as regards her future. Anne studied everyday preparing herself to come back to school. She wanted to become a writer to leave a message to humanity, she did not want to live in vain. Apart from that, Anne was thankful to the peolple who helped her and her family while hiding in the Annexe, always bringing up the goodness in them.
Anne Frank´s values are timeless and admired by many people around the world. The message of hope and love for life crossed age and cultural boundaries. She became a universal icon of strenght and optimism.

WL Assignment #4
Favia, Natalia
Guerrero, Victoria
Rodríguez, Marcela
It’s difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams, and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It’s a wonder I haven’t abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart. (Frank, Anne; 328)
Anne is optimistic as regards the future. She believes that the chaos, suffering and cruelty of the war will soon come to an end. After two years of hiding, Anne is able to hold on to her illusions and hope.
War brings out the best and the worst aspects in people. Both, generosity and greed appear in the Annex. Although the van Daans and the Franks share everything with Mr. Dussel, he refuses to do the same. At the same time, Anne values the kindness and generosity of the Annex helpers such as Miep, Bep, Kugler and Kleiman. Anne struggles with the idea that they should have been more generous sharing their resources with more people.
Though Anne feels lucky for having escaped the fate of others, she also feels guilty about being in hiding. She is thankful to still be alive. She expresses her dilemma of being fortunate and unlucky about her personal situation. But she realizes that she loves life too much and decides she is lucky for evading the prosecution.
Despite the pain and miseries the group undergoes in the Annex, Anne is able to find a light in the darkness. Facing the worst side of human nature, she always remains optimistic about humanity.

…As for us, we´re quite fortunate. Luckier than millions of people. It´s quiet and safe here, and we´re using our money to buy food. We´re so selfish that we talk about “after the war” and look forward to new clothes and shoes, when actually we should be saving every penny to help others when the war is over, to salvage whatever we can…(The Diary of a Young Girl. Entry: Wednesday 13th January,1943, p.80)
Anne Frank was a girl who lived and died during the Holocaust. During the two years that she spent in captivity, she became more mature and sympathetic towards other people. Anne began to learn that she could no longer live in the innocent social world of a young teenager, and she had to confront the adult world and the harshness and dangers of the war.
Despite the abominable circumstances Anne had to face while being in the Secret Annexe, such as starvation, boredom and lack of privacy, she still felt lucky enough to be in a hiding place. “When I think about our lives here, I usually come to the conclusion that we live in a paradise compared with the Jews who aren´t in hiding”. (The Diary of a Young Girl .Entry: Sunday 2nd May 1943,p. 99)
In the outside world Jews were persecuted and sent to concentration camps where they were herded and killed. With plenty of time to contemplate life, Anne dared to think about her future. She couldn´t change her reality, but she thought that life outside the annexe was far more dangerous. Many Jews were harassed and arrested. The Nazi police didn´t give any special treatment to children or adults. That´ s why Anne was fortunate to be into hiding.
Anne was generous when considering that outside the secret annexe, Jewish people were living under too much strain and also lacked consolation. She considered her family and herself as altruistic people, who were not considerate towards others´ needs. Thinking about the living conditions in the annexe because of the war made Anne felt extremely miserable. This is why Anne praised every little luxury in the annexe and minimized her suffering when comparing herself with the rest of the Jews who were dying of hunger and exhaustion.
In other words, even though Anne confronted several controversial issues while living in captivity, she still dared to take the time to think about the future and sacrificed her own sorrow to contemplate others´ sadness.
